It’s been a whirlwind end of summer. For Labor Day weekend, Zack and I found ourselves up at Lake Tahoe visiting his sister and soaking up the cooler *fall* weather.
It was a much needed escape from the craziness that has been life lately. On top of being in the middle of our busy season at work, they restructured my department. Basically we all got “laid off” but had the option to interview/transfer to a new position, and I just started the new position this week.
But back to our vacation. Lake Tahoe/the surrounding area was beautiful. Zack and I hit the road after work on Friday and arrived around 2:30am (!!), but it was worth it to have all of Saturday and Sunday to explore.
His sister, Lizie, was the perfect tour guide. We fueled up for a late morning meal at a diner called Jax on the Tracks in Truckee and wandered around the town after. We stumbled upon the cutest little oil + spice shop and tasted all the oil and vinegar flavors. I ended up buying a garlic olive oil and a strawberry balsamic vinegar to pair with it.
After that we did a bunch of sightseeing. First we headed up to Donner Summit where we got an amazing view of Donner Lake and the Rainbow Bridge. Then we headed down to Lake Tahoe and stopped at Speedboat Beach before wandering around Kings Beach.
Day 2 started out with a morning hike down to Chimney Beach where we crawled around the rocks and laid in the sun until the bees chased us away. From there we hiked up to Monkey Rock which had us all pretty out of breath (especially when you’re not used to being at an elevation of almost 7000 feet), but the view of the lake (and of course the monkey rock) was worth it.
After a much needed afternoon nap, we headed to South Lake for dinner and a fireworks show to close out our weekend. Monday morning we were up and on the road and wishing the long weekend was longer.
Definitely want to visit again when there’s snow and do some skiing/snowboarding. And again when it’s warmer so we can swim in the lake. But I was absolutely loving the fall weather, and it seems like we may have brought a little bit back to SoCal with us (at least this week).
