Tortilla Republic

A

If you know me at all, you know I love Mexican food. I don’t care if it’s a taco off a food truck or some fancy schmancy restaurant. . .you can count me in. And Zack, being the great husband that he is, found a new-to-us Mexican restaurant in West Hollywood, and we decided to give it a try over the weekend: Tortilla Republic.

Our menu for the afternoon:

chips + salsa // baja camarones tacos // vegetariano bowl + chicken // churro bites

First of all, chips + salsa are my weakness, so it’s crucial for a good Mexican restaurant to get this right. I prefer a not-so-chunky salsa, and Tortilla Republic nailed it. I think Zack + I inhaled a few baskets of chips, but who’s counting?

Zack and I used to be really bad about going out to dinner and ordering the exact same meal. . .but we’ve been getting better, and now we both typically order something different so we can share and try even more of the menu. So I went with the shrimp tacos, and Zack ordered a Vegetarian Burrito Bowl (but we added chicken because we like meat).

Baja Camerones Tacos: tequila battered shrimp + mango salsa + tequila passion cabbage slaw + avocado + chipotle aioli + lime. SO MANY FLAVORS, SO MUCH GOODNESS. I think this was my favorite of the two entrees, but I also love shrimp tacos everywhere I go.

Vegetarian Bowl:  spinach + asparagus + chayote squash + cremini mushroom + brussel sprouts + truffle oil + cheese + salsa mocha + creamy tomatillo sauce + purple kale + rice + beans + chicken. We were torn between the chicken taco and the veggie taco, but when the waiter said we could just add chicken to the veggie option, we were sold. And since you can take any of their tacos and turn them into a bowl or a burrito, we decided to switch it up and go with a bowl for our second entree.

Churro Bites: And who can say no to dessert when churros are on the menu? These were melt in your mouth delicious. They came with chocolate dipping sauce and a honey lavender syrup (Favorite! I could’ve licked the bowl clean).

Overall thoughts: Definitely one to try. The patio was pretty crowded, but there was plenty of seating inside, and Zack and I actually had the back room practically to ourselves. The decor was very unique, the service was excellent, and the food was drool-worthy. Just typing this post has me craving more churro bites.
